SALMON EGG
The salmon egg is the excitement of life ready to spring forth. This design expresses a child-like wonder at the transformation from egg to fish; amazement that salmon can swim all the way to Alaska and come right back to their spawning ground to begin the circle of life again.
The inspiration for three of this year's designs came from the historical importance of the local city of Sidney to the Tsartlip people. Sidney is the only local place where the tides run in such a way that reef netting of sockeye salmon was successful. Taken together the three pieces link to tell a story; from the birth of the salmon in "Salmon Egg" through the harvesting of the salmon in "Reef Net" to the death of the salmon after spawning and their consumption by eagles in "Two Eagles". It is intentional that in none of the designs is the human element dominant.
